Lionel Messi scores two and adds an assist as Inter Miami beat Nashville 3-1

Lionel Messi was at his brilliant best for Inter Miami on Saturday, scoring two goals and adding an assist on his way to a 3-1 win over Nashville SC.

After a Franco Negri own goal gave Nashville the early lead, Messi equalized in the 11th minute and set up Sergio Busquets’ goal in the 39th minute to make it a 2-1 score at halftime.

After a back-and-forth second half, the Argentine scored a penalty in the 81st minute, putting the result out of reach.

Busquets said in Spanish after the match: “Very happy that the goal helped the team win the match.

“It’s about the team and the win. Today I was able to score, but the ultimate result is the positive results for our team.”

Messi improved his goal tally in MLS to seven, following a previous two-goal performance against Orlando in March.

The veteran has now scored a goal or provided an assist in each of the six league matches he has played, four of which he has missed due to injury.

Miami remains in first place in the Eastern Conference and is scheduled to play New England next Saturday.
