Whitecaps take advantage of two red cards from Seattle to beat Sounders 2-0

SEATTLE – Seattle’s Jackson Ragen was sent off for a red card in the 43rd minute, Alex Roldan had to leave in the 75th minute and the Vancouver Whitecaps took advantage to post a 2-0 win over the Sounders on Saturday night.

Ragen left the Sounders (1-4-3) down to a man after a video review upgraded his foul on Ryan Gauld. Roldan left the game after fouling Vancouver’s Ali Ahmed.

Gauld set up the first goal of the match in the 58th minute when he used Sam Adekugbe’s assist to drill a left-footed shot from the center of the penalty area through the center into the top center of the net. It was his third goal of the season, and all of them came in the last four games.

Brian White added an independent goal in the 71st minute for the Whitecaps (5-2-1). He has scored a goal in three straight games and has four this season.

Yohei Takaoka saved two shots to earn his third clean sheet of the season for the Whitecaps, moving him level on four points for the league lead.

Stefan Frei made two saves in total for the Sounders, who have scored just nine goals this season. Five of them earned a shutout win at home against Montreal before being shutout twice since.

The Whitecaps – the first Western Conference club to reach five wins – have won all three of their road games this season.

Seattle travels to DC United on Saturday. Vancouver remains on the road to play the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
