MIAMI – Inter Miami CF (5W-2L-3D, 18 points) earned a 3-1 victory at home tonight over Nashville SC to continue the team’s positive momentum this regular season. Midfielder Sergio Busquets’ first goal for the Club and a brace from captain Lionel Messi led the side to victory on the evening at Chase Stadium, in front of a Club record home crowd.

“I think we weren’t quite there in the first half, but in the second half we were able to correct the mistakes step by step, and we felt comfortable after we equalized… The first chance we In our half we finally found the goal which ended up being a rebound off Leo (Messi), which could have been a goal at first, but anyway it was a crucial moment to tie the game,” said head coach Gerardo ‘Tata. Martino.

Inter Miami lined up with Drake Callender in goal; Marcelo Weigandt, Tomás Avilés, Nicolás Freire and Franco Negri formed a back line of four in defence; Julian Gressel, Busquets and David Ruiz started in midfield; Messi and Diego Gómez flanked striker Luis Suárez in attack.

The match started with the visitors opening the scoring early, with Nashville taking an early lead via an own goal following a corner kick in the second minute of action.

However, Inter Miami would respond shortly afterwards with a goal of their own to tie the score. In the 11th minute, after Messi’s first attempt in the penalty area was denied by the keeper, Suárez assisted the Argentine maestro on the left side of the penalty area, allowing him to send the ball into the back of the net to equalize. The goal was Messi’s sixth goal this regular season and eighth in all competitions, matching Suárez’s marks as the team’s top scorer, while the assist was Suárez’s fourth this regular season.

The hosts would then reverse proceedings and take control of the match after scoring a second goal in the 39th minute. Messi’s ball from a corner in the penalty area found Busquets at the near post for the midfielder to head the ball into the back of the net to give Inter Miami a 2-1 lead. The goal was Busquets’ first since joining the Club, while the assists were Messi’s sixth this regular season and eighth in all competitions, as he remains the team’s best provider. Additionally, the assist also helped Messi make MLS history as he became the first player in league history to score multiple goals in five out of six games at the start of a season.

The score then held for the final minutes of the first half and most of the second 45 minutes saw the game evenly matched, but there was more to the hosts’ play. In the 80th minute, substitute Leo Afonso was brought down in the penalty area and a penalty was given to Inter Miami. Messi then calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net in the 81st minute to give Inter Miami a 3–1 lead and record his seventh goal this regular season and ninth in all competitions in 2024, making him the team’s top scorer became.

The 3-1 scoreline remained unmoved and Inter Miami claimed all three points at Chase Stadium to remain atop the Eastern Conference standings.

Next, Inter Miami travels to Massachusetts to take on the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, April 27 at 7:30 PM ET.

Ocean’s Day Theme evening presented by Fracht Group

In an encouraging display of unity and purpose, Inter Miami CF and Fracht Group are at it again, standing together for a cause close to our hearts: saving our oceans. Fresh off their impactful beach cleanup on February 27, which found its match with 205 kilos of ocean waste, these champions of environmental stewardship are uniting once again for #TeamSeas. This global initiative aims to raise crucial funds to rid our oceans of 30 million kilos of plastic and waste, demonstrating their continued commitment to the well-being of our planet.

The action started big tonight at Chase Stadium. Fracht Group rolled out the red carpet for their Ocean’s Day campaign, kicking off their own special theme night takeover on Earth Day. But here’s the kicker: for every goal and/or epic save Inter Miami CF makes during every home game for the remainder of the MLS regular season, Fracht will donate money to #TeamSeas. It’s like watching your favorite team play, but with a truly great twist: you’re also scoring big for the planet.
