Strong performance for women’s team at NYS Collegiate Championships

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Union College women’s team had a strong performance Saturday at the New York State Collegiate Championships in Fish Creek.

The team encountered a crosswind that affected the afternoon races and weather in the mid-50s.

Union’s Varsity 4+ A boat placed third in the grand finals in a heat made up of NCAA Division I schools. The team finished in 8:46.907, 10 seconds behind Colgate University and just five seconds behind Marist College. Union’s team consisted of seniors Katie Riley (coxswain), second year Sadie White (stroke), junior Olivia Anderson (3-seater), junior Julia Cole (2-seater) and senior Ella Tycz (bow).

The Frosh/Novice 4+ boat placed first in their final with a time of 9:23.035, just over 40 seconds ahead of second place Long Island University. Union’s winning team was made up of sophomores Melina McGovern (coxswain), first year Sara Hannan (stroke), first-year Olivia Wekema (3-seater), first-year Susanna Harrow (2 seats), and freshmen Emma Friedman (bow).

Sophomore Women’s Varsity 4+ C team Melina McGovern (helmsman), senior Ann Zhang (stroke), freshman Carly Thompson (3 seats), freshmen Amy Gagliardi (2-seater) and junior Claire Schroeder (bow) finished first in the Petit final with a time of 8:59.041. The Varsity 4+ B team of second years Khadija Amir (helmsman), junior Sarah Beckwith (stroke), senior Grace Parinisenior Marlena Fornuto (2-seater) and junior Lena Nowell (bow) came third in the petit final with a time of 9:34.035.

Union returns to the water on Friday, May 3 at the Liberty League Championships hosted at Fish Creek.
