Rams end regular season with loss at Massachusetts

AMHERST, Mass. – Rhode Island closed the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 loss at Massachusetts.

Sophomore Nikki Fernando scored the only point of the day for Rhode Island (13-6, 3-3 Atlantic 10). She defeated Ella Faessler in straight sets 7–5, 6–0, for her 18th singles victory of the season.

The Rams also earned a doubles victory over the team of Steph Hylton And Priyanka Shanker. They won at number 2 6-3 against Faessler and Amelia Tye. UMass (12-7, 4-1 A-10) took the other two doubles matches to earn the team point.

“It was close margins today against a good UMass team,” Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said. “We played our style of doubles and did well in singles. Great preparation for the A-10 tournament next week.”

Rhode Island heads to Orlando, Florida next week to compete in the Atlantic 10 Championship. The seeding for the tournament will be announced early this week. The first round begins on Wednesday, April 24 at the USTA National Campus.
